 Welcome to Online Learning

Welcome to ENC 1102 Composition II Online!

This completely online course officially begins on Monday, January 11th, 2010.

Here are a few important points about our class.

 Online Format:

This section of ENC 1102 Online is predicated on the assumption that literacy in the twenty-first century is measured by an individual’s ability to communicate and conduct research in both traditional print-based formats and in a variety of electronic and web-based media. Successful participation in this class therefore requires not only an existing familiarity with computers and the web but the desire to extend that familiarity while refining traditional composition skills. While online classes offer attractive advantages in terms of time management and eliminate transportation concerns usually associated with the traditional classroom, you should not consider these advantages as the primary reason for taking this course.

Please review the resources below to determine if this class is right for you:

·         Are distance learning courses right for me?

·         Online learning.net self assessment

·         Self evaluation

·         What makes a successful online student?

If you have any concerns after reviewing these self-assessment resources, be sure to contact me prior to the semester deadline for dropping classes.

 Blackboard:

We will be using Blackboard, as well as a few other online tools, for managing the class and posting assignments.  Go to https://my.usf.edu and log on using your USF Net ID.  (If you do not have a USF Net ID, you can obtain one by visiting the Academic Computing Net ID Sign Up Page at https://una.acomp.usf.edu/). This section of ENC 1102 will be listed on the Courses tab from the myUSF Home Page.

 Assignments:

Weekly task assignments for all major projects and activities will be available on Blackboard or our virtual classroom no later than 12:01 am Monday morning for all work due in a given week.

Unless otherwise specified, due dates for all ENC 1102 Online assignments will be Sunday night at 11:59 pm for all work assigned in the preceding seven days.  (Example: assignments made during Week 1, from Monday, August 25, 2008 until Sunday, September 31, 2008, will be due at 11:59 pm on Sunday, September 31, 2008).

 Enrollment Verification:

Your enrollment in this class assumes that you will have access to your USF e-mail account and that you will check your e-mail, as well as Blackboard and our virtual classroom Announcements, every two days or so for course updates.  As I will note in the Assignment for Week 1, you also must do the following in order to verify your enrollment in the class:

Review the course syllabus available from the Syllabus selection on the Blackboard page for this class.

Review the Classroom Policies Agreement Form at

 http://collegewriting.us/archives/old_documents/Classroom_Policies_08.doc

and review the Student Policies for Online Courses at

 http://collegewriting.us/policies%20and%20procedures/old/online_policies_procedures.aspx

Post a message to the Enrollment Verification Discussion Forum in Class Discussions affirming that you have read these documents and agree to abide by these rules.

This task is due no later than 11:59 pm Wednesday, January 13, 2010.

In addition to affirming your understanding of our standard classroom and online course policies, your post to the Enrollment Verification Discussion Forum will signal your involvement in this online course. Students not fulfilling this assignment by the due date will be dropped from the class.

If you have any questions about the course, please send me an e-mail.  Once again, welcome to ENC 1102 Online!
